Well I wasn't deliberately trying to find this. I found evidence that there was some work being done with Hytale in December of 2014. It may have all the features we want and the modding capability Minecraft should've had long ago. Even a game like Hytale that looks incredibly promising, is being made by people with a well-known Minecraft server community, and has the backing of Riot (and thus big boy Tencent) isn't going to release and be the "Minecraft killer" we dream of. If Mojang hasn't killed Minecraft yet, they're not going to be able to. Mojang stands behind their reporting system that can ban you from your self-hosted servers in Minecraft Community developed game inspired by cube world. Libre gaming is the only excusable form of gaming I'm not associated with it, just a curious fan.

Veloren is a free & open source game inspired by Cube World.

For example, in the web services I write using Actix, application. ECS makes the dream work here, but an Actor framework would work too. Embark is betting on Rust for their game dev projects. As for game development, Veloren is a pretty complex game, and it's written entirely in Rust. You can read about their success stories. Tons of big companies are using it: Amazon, Discord, Cloudflare, etc.
